Bufkit Data Distribution System

Welcome to the Bufkit Data Distribution System! This system provides real-time data for the National Weather Service's forecasting software Bufkit available for the NAM, GFS and RUC models for locations around the world. The concept for this site developed out of a need for a project to be the focus of the "Applications of Computers to Meteorology" class in the Department of Meteorology at Penn State. The work to create this site both on the surface and behind the scenes was a combined effort of Dr. George Young, professor of meteorology, Joe Koval, former master's degree student in meteorology, and the members of the Meteo 473 class of Spring 2000. The package is currently maintained and enhanced on a time-available basis by Art Person at Penn State.

NOTE - May 14, 2004: GFS model data was added to the suite. Also, methods used to calculate the LCL/LFC/EL and convective indices were modified to match more closely results produced by the U.S. National Weather Service. A number of bugs in the package were fixed as well. RUC data were also added a couple of weeks after this note.

NOTE - August 3, 2005: RUC hourly data were added to the suite. Previously, RUC data were only posted at 0, 6, 12, and 18Z.
