The various sub-directories provided within this master directory contain various data and supplementary information related to the publication (henceforth referred to as "MBH98"): Mann, M.E., Bradley, R.S., Hughes, M.K., Global-Scale Temperature Patterns and Climate Forcing Over the Past Six Centuries, Nature, 392, 779-787, 1998. Most of these materials have been previously available at the following public ftp sites: ftp://eclogite.geo.umass.edu/pub/mann/MANNETAL98/ ftp://holocene.evsc.virginia.edu/pub/MBH98/ Additional data and information related to Mann et al (1998) publication and subsequent related publications can be found at the NOAA Paleoclimatology web site: http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/paleo/ei/ei_cover.html http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/paleo/pubs/mann_99.html http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/paleo/pubs/mann1998/frames.htm The data and supplementary information provided here are organized within the following sub-directories (the README file contained within each individual sub-directory provides additional details): I. INSTRUMENTAL This directory contains: 1. Instrumental surface temperature eigenvectors (EOFs and PC series), their corresponding eigenvalues, and the gridbox centers for the 1082 instrumental surface temperature gridpoint series used. 2. gridpoint temperature standardization factors used to normalize the 1082 instrumental gridpoint series. 3. The original Climatic Research Unit (CRU) gridpoint surface temperature temperature database from 1854-1993 of Jones and Briffa [1992] used by MBH98 (this version of the dataset has been replaced by a different surface temperature dataset at CRU and is no longer available). A simple fortran program that reads in the data is provided. II. PROXY This directory contains: 1. The 11 distinct matrices of proxy data corresponding to the 11 distinct intervals of the stepwise reconstruction described by MBH98 2. The 11 corresponding files listing the corresponding set of proxy indicators, and the weights applied to those proxy indicators in the analysis. 3. Data matrix containing all 415 individual proxy (and instrumental/historical) series contributing to the proxy indicators networks used by MBH98. 4. Updated list of all individual series used by MBH98, with start/end dates of series, and references. III. FIGUREDATA This directory contains the ime series data shown in MBH98, corresponding to Figures 5a; 5b; 7. IV. METHODS A supplement to the brief description of methods provided in MBH98, providing some additional minor methodological details.
